Kells soccer team won the Las Vegas National Men's Friendship tournament played Jan.14th-17th. Kells, counting on both effort and Irish good fortune , took home the gold in the Men's Over- 35 division for the first time after competing in the tournament for many years. The invitation only tournament hosted the best men's teams from major cities such as LA, Chicago, Dallas, New York, & San Francisco. The Portland based team was seated last. As severe underdogs, Kells won the tournament over three days playing six games. Despite fierce and close matches, the team remained unbeaten to advance and win the final, besting the LA Soccer Club in an overtime battle. The game was decided in penalty kicks by the seventh shooter, Niall McDonnell. All six games were closely contested to the last minute, where good luck is both needed, on and off the field, in a city like Las Vegas. "It's sometimes important to be lucky and good" , according to Kells owner and player, Gerard McAleese. The team will return to the competition next year seeded in the number one spot. "Never bet against the Irish, especially in Vegas!," said player Steve Storlie.
